Go back, you fool, and speak to her...
The guitars in both instrumental bridges are somewhat astounding. I never heard something like that in a romantic song, really. Me, the singer, tried to stay far from any style reference, in spite of the many temptations (sometimes Greg Dulli would lead the way). The soul-sonic performance is a surprising show of ambition.
lyrics
Have you ever counted all the tears in Heaven, the child I was, he did - all the danger made me mute, then I shrinked it in a corner and chains are wings today, so come on, if you stick to me, I’ll step like you - may we figure a Messiah taking care of us two - it’s a toy, a broken ring - it’s a toy a bird with a broken wing So you strive to understand when I think about my friends, I dig it in because I’m so wild - Many memories at bay, surrounded by polite men, it’s so hard to find a true friend I keep on growing up, I was walking in, you were walking out in a haze of charm and beauty and alcohol, words left choking in my brain, and my thoughts like thunders in the rain, in the black sheets of rain, off the rails in a golden age, in a golden day with a golden sky it doesn’t matter now and it’s just a rhyme for a moment in life, for a moment in time, but I’m coming along well, I’m coming along
